The Sticky Stuff

The Sticky Stuff

So I was away for a week …on a cruise with my lovely partner’s family. I might write about that one day …I might not. Although this is not the right forum for talking about “cruising” I do have one thing to say. There is a lot, really a lot of food. As a cyclist in the height of the season I can only wish that the ship’s buffet was waiting at my home after every ride. These are the things that dreams are made of. …I won’t be too specific about the type of dream…

But my new wheels had to wait patiently for me to get back. A couple of days catching up at work left me with a few spare minutes to start gluing the tyres. (Sorry, a sense of history compels me to use the UK spelling. I promise I won’t do it again.) First I had to do one last round of truing. It seems that they don’t stay true like a modern aluminum or carbon rim. With any luck they will settle in but, let’s face it, will it surprise anyone if they are a bit more finicky?

So, it has been a few years since I glued tubulars but like building wheels …or riding a bike for that matter, it came back quickly. A quick sanding of the rims was all it took to get prepped. 20 minutes of careful brush-work did the rest. …Now, if the tyres (oops, did it again) go on without covering the braking surface in glue I will be a happy man. If I don’t screw it up I might just get a test-ride on the weekend…
